Hi everybody, Hunter here!
So our newest episode talks about the League of Nations! If you have heard of it you’ve probably heard about the failures of it more than the successes which is fair! There were quite a few shortcoming of the League, however, there were absolutely some positives that came from it as well. One of the biggest takeaways was the international system finding a way that they did not want to form an international organization. The great powers stepped on the little powers and it was overall not a really effective organization. The whole point of the League of Nations was to not let another world war occur and we all know how that turned out. Mix the underwhelming support of great powers in with the thinking that obviously another world war could never break out again after having such devastating consequences and negative impact on life overall and together you get a global system that thinks there is no need for an international organization like the League. Enter in World War II and those thoughts quickly changed when states really recognized that they needed an international organization to help regulate conflicts so that nothing like this would ever happen again.
It was important that these takeaways were taken into account with the United Nations. There is a reason why the United Nations Security Council exists the way that it does. It exists so that it is able to help deter conflict that would arise to conflict among the great powers, those being; Nationalist China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It was important that there was buy-in from these great powers as we saw what happened what there was not with the League of Nations. There was no real incentive for smaller countries to join this arrangement if the bigger and more powerful countries weren’t going to join and show that they would abide by the same rules that they would be expected to adhere to if they had joined. So no wonder why there was only around a quarter of the membership that the United Nations has now!
We can’t wait to talk more about the United Nations in our special episode this Thursday that we will be putting out! We have been waiting a long time to make this episode since it does hold such a special spot in our hearts at Hot Girl Briefing. We will talk more about the structure and organization on Thursday and can’t wait for y’all to tune in!
